What shifting usage off-peak saves
Time-of-use plans price the same kilowatt-hour differently by hour. Nothing about your consumption has to change — only when it happens. Enter the two rates from your plan and the usage you could realistically move.
What to know
- The easiest kilowatt-hours to move are the ones a timer already controls: EV charging, dishwasher, laundry, pool pump, water heater.
- Pre-cooling a house before the peak window and coasting through it is the large one in summer, and it needs no equipment beyond a thermostat schedule.
- Check whether your plan has a demand charge as well as time-of-use rates. If it does, avoiding simultaneous large loads matters as much as timing.
Questions
- Where do I find my peak and off-peak rates?
- On the rate schedule your utility publishes for your plan, and usually on the bill itself. Include any seasonal difference — summer peaks are often much higher.
State rates are averages of what residential customers actually paid (June 2026), from EIA. Your own plan can differ. Everything on this page is computed in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
